NEW YORK – November 10, 2016 – On Tuesday, December 6, Thomas Dewar, Executive Director of Information Technology at Lutheran Social Services of New York (LSSNY) will speak on a panel discussion, What We Need to Know About Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Donor Privacy and More, as part of New York Nonprofit Media’s TechCon at The Convene at 32 Old Slip.

Mr. Dewar will present on cloud computing – a sometimes abstract and challenging concept – that is nonetheless becoming the norm for many nonprofit organizations. The panel will also address donor data privacy and cybersecurity, key components of the strategic planning that should take place prior to making IT enhancements to networking and data management systems.

Mr. Dewar, who has over 30 years of experience as an IT professional, joined LSSNY a year ago. In that short time, he has made impressive enhancements to the organization’s IT infrastructure by making strategic purchasing decisions to replace inadequate network systems, introducing software enhancements like Office 365 and securing new federal funding sources to underwrite IT projects.

Mr. Dewar has written extensively on IT topics, including articles on informed decision making for software purchases, streamlining operations through automation and improving IT networks for secure data management. He advises nonprofit organizations to engage in thoughtful planning prior to the implementation of new IT initiatives, ensuring the development of secure and efficient systems that will positively support nonprofit projects, human services and programming. “Our staff today are more mobile than ever. Our locations are more fluid as contracts come and go, and facilities open and close. There are no budgets for an army of technology support staff. Tactical use of cloud computing can help you create a future-proof infrastructure. Combine that with a simplified, user-friendly IT environment, add a dash of poka-yoke, blend with a strategic IT plan that supports the actual business of your business and you have a recipe for success,” Mr. Dewar said.

Prior to joining LSSNY, Mr. Dewar was the Senior Director of Applications & Healthcare Systems at The New York Foundling; he has also served as the Chief Information Officer at Leake and Watts Services, Inc. He is co-chair of the Council on Families and Child Care Agencies (COFCCA) Information Technology Committee and is on the Mount Sinai Delivery System Reform Incentive Program (DSRIP) IT and Stakeholders Committees.
