Since 1995, Lutheran Social Services of New York’s Immigration Legal Program (ILP) has provided legal advice, representation, and community outreach to thousands of immigrants across New York City. ILP’s main focus is family-based relief, humanitarian relief, and the removal defense of asylum seekers, special immigrant juveniles, and other immigrants. Through this work, ILP represents refugees and asylees seeking protection from persecution and violence, unaccompanied minors fleeing dangerous conditions, families seeking reunification, and aspiring US citizens from all over the world.

In addition to offering direct representation, ILP recently expanded limited scope services to prepare immigrants proceeding without attorneys, or pro se, in immigration court. Funded by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and the New York City Council, these services aim to empower and educate immigrants advocating on their own behalf. This one-on-one support is complemented by robust community outreach including clinics, workshops, and informational sessions. The support of ILP, whether through full representation or limited scope assistance, provides LSSNY’s immigrant neighbors with reliable, compassionate, and high-quality legal services as they strive to achieve their own American Dreams.
