Snip, snip, snip goes the scissor…buzz, buzz, buzz goes the buzzer…
These were the sounds of our barbering program at The New LIFE School in the Bronx, a therapeutic school which served special needs students age 8-21 (grades 3-12). We made the difficult decision to close the school and placed our students in other educational programs. Of our senior class, 17 students graduated, two enrolled in college, and four obtained barbering licenses.
Our Seneca House shelter inherited the barber chairs. Director Rudy Chacin decided to put them to good use, bringing in a professional barber friend who provided fresh haircuts to the residents — free of charge.
Says Executive Director for Residential Services Rachel Bleecker, LMSW, “It truly does take a village and Rudy and his network of friends clearly understand that.”
Please consider a year-end donation to LSSNY so that we can continue to support the most underserved and vulnerable in New York.
