NEW YORK – August 2018  In response to the work of Lutheran Social Services of New York (LSSNY) in reunifying immigrant children with their parents this summer, Caring Capital spearheaded a joint enterprise with their corporate partners to help immigrant children served at LSSNY. Inspired by the caring compassion and dedication of LSSNY staff and caseworkers, Caring Capital President Susie Schub reached out to LSSNY President and CEO Damyn and learned about our Safe Haven Program, which provides shelter and temporary foster care services to children who arrive in the United States without a parent or guardian.

Caring Capital then galvanized their corporate partners in the fields of insurance, marketing, human resources and finance to help ease the burden these children face and created the Backpack Bundles initiative. Caring Capital, along with A.J. O’Connor Associates and others, created approximately 60 Backpack Bundles for immigrant children in our Safe Haven Program. Volunteers decorated and customized each backpack into themes, such as a ladybug theme, and filled it with hand-decorated journals, caps, clothes, books, toys and other fun items.

“We are grateful to Caring Capital and all of our corporate partners for their meaningful contributions to our mission of serving the most vulnerable among us with compassion, dignity and respect,” stated Damyn Kelly, LSSNY President and CEO. “It is at the very core of LSSNY’s mission to preserve and unite families. And it is through our caring volunteers, supporters and corporate partners, as well as our dedicated staff and foster parents, that we continue to serve as an example of Christ’s love in action,” added Mr. Kelly.

LSSNY provides shelter and temporary foster care services to children who arrive in the United States without a parent or guardian. LSSNY also provides comprehensive care for children who are in our care while waiting to be reunified with a suitable sponsor, such as a verified family member or a close friend with a direct relationship to the child. The unaccompanied children in our care live in a group home or temporary foster care placements that are in a home-like setting, and receive high-quality, trauma-informed and culturally-sensitive services, including mental and medical health care services, case management, bilingual education in all main subjects, socialization and recreational activities. Children are also provided individual and group counseling by mental health professionals.

Since its inception in 1886, Lutheran Social Services of New York has advocated for the safety and well-being of all children. Having first begun as an orphanage and now as a multi-service, social service organization and licensed foster care agency, Lutheran Social Services of New York (LSSNY) is a steadfast advocate for the rights of all children, regardless of gender, religion, race, nationality or immigration status.
